A tactile membrane switch adds a felt click under every key, using a stainless metal dome or an embossed poly dome at about 200 to 400 gf. Crisvex builds the whole sealed panel to your drawing, so the feel, force and life match how the panel is used.

Tactile element
Stainless steel, nickel-plated snap dome (for example about 8.4 mm at about 350 gf) or an embossed poly dome, or flat non-tactile where you do not need a click.

Dome retainer
Polyester retainer layer about 0.10 mm thick, holding each metal dome on its contact pad so it stays centered over the life of the panel.
Overlay
PET polyester or polycarbonate, about 0.15 to 0.20 mm (0.006 to 0.008 in), for example 0.175 mm, hard coated and printed on the second surface, with matte, gloss or anti-glare finish.
Circuit
Printed silver on PET, about 0.125 mm per layer with a carbon overprint where needed, or a copper flexible printed circuit (FPC) where you need it.
Spacer
PET switch spacer about 0.20 to 0.25 mm (for example 0.225 mm), die cut with vent channels so trapped air can escape on each press.
Stack height
Graphic overlay, layer adhesive, dome retainer, upper and lower printed circuit, spacer and rear adhesive bonded as one sealed panel, about 0.8 to 1.0 mm total (for example about 0.875 mm).
Backlight
Optional LED or light guide film (LGF) for low-light legibility, in one or more colors.
Windows
Clear LCD windows in the overlay, with optional anti-glare or polarized finish.
Tail / connector
Printed silver or copper FPC tail, terminated with ZIF, pin header or crimp, with optional EMI shielding.
Rear adhesive
3M 467MP or 468MP rear adhesive, about 0.05 mm, to mount the panel, sealed wipe-clean front with bonded edges.
Size
Single key up to about 500 mm (about 20 in) on a side; typical keypads run from about 120 x 140 mm to about 480 x 165 mm, made to your drawing.

What a tactile membrane switch is

A felt click, built into a sealed printed panel.

A tactile membrane switch is the same layered, sealed panel as any membrane switch, with one addition: a snap element under each key that gives a positive click as the contact closes. That click comes from a nickel-plated stainless steel dome or a dome embossed into the polyester layer. The hard-coated overlay at about 0.175 mm, the silver circuit printed at about 0.125 mm per layer, the spacer at about 0.225 mm and the rear adhesive all stay the same, so the finished stack lands near 0.875 mm with a wipe-clean front and a single tail out.

The point of a tactile key is confirmation. The operator knows the press registered without watching a screen, which matters on medical, industrial and weighing panels used by feel. We set the dome to your target force, around 350 gf for a typical mid-range key inside the 200 to 400 gf band, then verify it on an actuation force test before the panel ships.

Crisp click, long life

Nickel-plated stainless steel snap domes give a sharp, high-contrast click with a clear make point. The feel stays consistent over a high cycle count, so metal domes suit buttons pressed many times a day on industrial controllers, instruments and medical devices.

Poly dome

Soft feel, low profile

Domes embossed into the polyester layer give a softer, quieter tactile response and a low, even key profile across the whole face. Poly domes spread many tactile keys over a large area at lower cost, a good fit for appliance and HVAC faces and lighter-duty panels.

  • Force - within the same approximate 200 to 400 gf range.

Dome shape
Round, 4-leg or cross, picked from the key size, the press area and how the dome needs to be held on its pad.
Dome size
About 2 to 16 mm (about 0.08 to 0.63 in) across, matched to the key opening in the overlay.
Click force
About 200 to 400 gf, set to your target; about 340 gf is a common mid-range pick for an everyday key.
Life
Up to about 5 million actuations for a metal dome, so the feel holds on keys pressed often.
Plating
Stainless steel with nickel, silver or gold plating, chosen for contact resistance and the working environment.

One normally-open contact per dome, closing onto the printed silver pad on make.

How it works

How the tactile click works.

Each key on a tactile membrane switch runs the same short cycle, from press to reset, with the metal dome doing the work.

STEP 01

Press

A finger pushes on the embossed key in the overlay. The load passes down through the overlay adhesive onto the top of the stainless dome.

STEP 02

Dome snap

At the target force, about 200 to 400 gf, the dome buckles and snaps through. That collapse is the felt click and gives the finger a clear make point.

STEP 03

Contact close

The collapsed dome bridges onto the printed silver pad on the lower circuit. The normally-open contact closes and the signal registers, with contact bounce held under about 0.3 ms.

STEP 04

Release

As the finger lifts, the load drops below the dome's snap force and the spring steel starts to return toward its rest shape.

STEP 05

Reset

The dome pops back to its domed shape, the contact opens and the key sits ready for the next press, held centered on its pad by the retainer layer.

How long does a tactile membrane switch last?+
Metal dome keys are built for high-cycle use and hold their click feel over a long working life, which is why they suit buttons pressed many times a day. Poly dome keys also give repeatable presses for lighter duty. We check dome feel and contact for repeatable presses over the panel's working life.
Can a tactile membrane switch be backlit or sealed?+
Yes. A tactile membrane switch can take optional LED or light guide film backlighting and clear LCD windows, and the front stays a sealed, wipe-clean surface with bonded edges. Tactile feel, backlight and sealing are all set on the same panel to your drawing.
