Membrane switch manufacturing, print to final test.

Print, circuit, tactile, assembly and test run on our own lines in China. One factory holds the whole build, which is how color, click feel and lead times stay consistent from samples through reorders.

How we build it

Six stages from your drawing to a finished panel.

Each membrane switch passes the same stages in the same order. Below is what happens at each step and what we check before the panel moves on.

1. Print the overlay

We screen print your graphic overlay on PET polyester or polycarbonate, matching each ink to your Pantone reference and adding windows, texture and selective gloss.

2. Silver circuit or FPC

We print the silver and carbon ink circuit on PET, or build a copper flexible printed circuit tail where the routing or component load needs it.

3. Dome placement & emboss

For tactile keys we position stainless metal domes over each contact, or emboss poly domes into the overlay, both tuned to your click force.

4. Laminate the stack

We bond the overlay, spacer, circuit and tactile layers with the spacer setting the contact gap, then apply the 3M adhesive backing for mounting.

5. Die-cut to shape

A steel-rule die cuts the panel to your outline, tail route and mounting holes, so each piece drops into your enclosure the same way.

6. Test & sign-off

We run circuit continuity, actuation force and life-cycle checks on a test fixture, then issue the outgoing report before the run ships.

Tooling

Soft tooling for samples, hard tooling for volume.

A membrane switch needs its own set of tools before the first panel runs. We split that into soft tooling to prove the design on samples, and hard tooling for repeatable production, so you pay for production tools once the build is approved.

  • SSoft tooling - screen-print screens, a printing fixture and a sample die let us prove artwork, color and feel on 5 to 50 sample pieces in about 2 to 3 weeks.
  • HHard tooling - a steel-rule die for the outline, a spacer die for the contact gap and dome positioning aids hold tolerances across a full production run.
  • TTest fixture + PCB - a dedicated fixture and test PCB map your key layout, so continuity and force can be checked the same way on every batch.

Quality control

The panel you approve is the panel you get.

Quality is built into the same lines that print and assemble the switch, not bolted on at the end. Every run goes through the checks below, and finished goods leave with a report so color, feel and contact stay consistent across reorders.

  • Pantone color matchEach overlay ink is matched to your Pantone reference and signed off against a color swatch before production, so legends and brand color stay consistent.
  • Circuit continuity testEvery printed circuit and FPC tail is checked for clean, complete contact across all keys, with no opens, shorts or missed traces.
  • Actuation force testTactile keys are verified within the agreed click-force range, around 200 to 400 gf, so the feel matches the approved sample.
  • Life-cycle testDomes are cycled on a fixture to confirm feel and contact hold up over the panel's working life of repeated presses.
  • OQC report & COCOutgoing quality control inspects each batch to AQL 0.25 for major defects and AQL 1.0 for minor, then issues a report with a certificate of conformance so the shipment matches your approved spec. Outline and thickness are measured on three to five pieces from the batch, and the printed face is checked against a fixed list: graphic print, dirt, cracks, scratches, hand marks and burrs. Each report also records the exact overlay film, circuit film and rear adhesive that went into that batch, so a reorder can be matched to what you approved rather than to a description.

What we do in-house for membrane switch manufacturing.

Every step that sets color, feel and contact stays under one roof, so nothing is sub-let between samples and your reorders.

  • Screen printing of graphics and dielectricWe print the graphic overlay second-surface, then lay down the dielectric and insulation layers that separate and protect the circuit.
  • Silver and carbon circuit printingConductive silver traces are printed on 0.125 mm PET, with a carbon overprint on the contact pads for wear and stable resistance.
  • Embossing and die cuttingWe emboss keys and poly domes into the overlay, then die cut the spacer, contact gap and outline so each panel fits the same enclosure.
  • Metal dome placement and laminationStainless metal domes are placed over each contact, then the overlay, spacer and circuit are laminated into one stack with the 3M rear adhesive.
  • Tail bonding, crimping and test fixturesWe bond and crimp the silver or FPC tail to its connector, then verify the build on a dedicated test fixture mapped to your key layout.
  • Soft and hard toolingSoft tooling proves the design on samples; hard tooling holds the same tolerances across a full tactile membrane switch production run.

Assembled thickness lands around 0.5 to 1.0 mm, with a flat build thinner than a metal-dome membrane switch. The ingress rating is built to your drawing.

Testing & sign-off

Testing and sign-off before a run ships.

Every batch passes the same checks, and finished goods leave with paperwork so the panel you approved is the panel you get.

  • Pantone color matchEach overlay ink is checked against your Pantone reference and color swatch before the run is released.
  • Circuit continuityEvery printed circuit and tail is tested across all keys for clean contact, with no opens, shorts or missed traces.
  • Actuation force and contact bounceTactile keys are verified within the agreed force range, and contact bounce is checked so make is clean.
  • Life-cycle testMetal domes are cycled on a fixture, reaching up to about 5 million presses; see our life-cycle guide for what that means in service.
  • Backlight and window checkBacklight uniformity and LED brightness are reviewed, and each window is inspected for cosmetic defects.
  • Ingress check, OQC and COCIngress is checked to your drawing, then outgoing quality control issues an OQC report and certificate of conformance.
